DEADLINE GETTING CLOSER

The deadline for submitting entries into The Yard’s Autumn Contest is getting closer. At the end of this month the entry period expires, so make sure you are hitting the streets and taking that one pic that will blow our minds.

In this issue a selection of images from the Digi Classic gallery are shown, Brian Q. Webb gives a new PhotoJazz Five interview as a some short news towards the end.

CROSSING THE LINE – POLLYWOGS BEWARE

*Crossing the Line: An initiation rite practiced in navies around the world that celebrates a sailor’s (pollywog) first crossing of the Equator. The Royal Navy, US Navy, US Coast Guard, US Marine Corps and others celebrate this event. Before the young sailor crosses the Equator for the first time he is referred to as a pollywog, afterward his nickname changes to “Shellback” meaning Sons of Neptune.


A TIME FOR LEISURE

We have been sailing the oceans since May and only focused upon discipline, rules and work. We are close to the equator and the skipper fears mutiny. He suddenly speaks with a softer voice and smiles towards his officers a lot more often than before. He has also tripled the rations of whisky to three servings per week and most importantly, decided to run a competition… As usual you will also find a Sudor’s Corner, A PhotoJazz Five and other goodies in here. But the competition is what deserves most attention from you all.

HIGH SUMMER IN THE UK

It is impossible not to mention London in this issue if you are into street photography. Seemingly out of the blue, a Street Photography Festival [link] was announced to be held in London earlier this year, with exhibitions, events, workshops and awards. It was all to go on through much of the months June and July. Perhaps the most interesting item was the International Street Photography Awards [link] where street photography portfolios from all of the world. Well apparently the marketing staff have outdone themselves, because it seems like everybody into street photography is talking about London.

SOUNDING THE FOGHORN

Definition of a foghorn: A device that uses sound to let other ships know of the presence of another ship in foggy conditions.


SERIOUS EXPOSURE – HOW DOES IT WORK?

Some of the images that make in to The Yard’s, albeit relatively large dA micro cosmos, gain momentum and perpetuate themselves away from oblivion! How? By being selected to the featured gallery or by ending up in the Yard’s journals. Every ten days a new journal is published, and is in turn copied, in parts or in its entirety, or at least referred to Yard accounts at the following sites: Apart from here at dA, Our own website in the shape of a WordPress blog, Facebook, Flickr, Shadowness, My Shuterspace, Reddit, Stumble Upon and Twitter. That means nine different sites are blowing the foghorn at the same time in the misty and treacherous waters of the world wide web. In fact some internet marketers of “creative freelancers” will charge you money to do this. (Also have in mind that the short News segment near the end in the Journals also gets multiplied by nine. So do not hesitate to send a note to *absolutpe if you want to suggest news about yourself or others.
